Nelson Motels Booked Out Over New Years Period

Holidaymakers wanting Nelson accommodation at short notice might be struggling to find beds this summer with it shaping up to be a busy season. Nelson Motels administration officer John Gilbertson said the city's motels were booked out over the New Year period.

Visitors flocked to Nelson and Tasman for the regions' New Year celebrations and summer events. Nelson’s New Years Eve Countdown on the Church Steps attracted a crowd enjoying the music, food stalls and fireworks while outdoor movies, a buskers festival, music at the beach and opera at the park are just a few of the popular events kicking off Nelson's summer months. "It's buzzing... Basically if people haven't booked a room there's no room to be had," Gilbertson said.

Tourism Industry Association chief executive Chris Robert said visitor arrivals to New Zealand numbered 3.09 million last year – the highest-ever annual total, and an increase of 9 per cent from the previous year. "While we might expect later in January and when the schools go back that things will ease up this summer, we expect many places will be full right through to late March."

So anyone thinking about having a holiday or short break in Nelson over the rest of the summer season should book ahead as the strong demand for accommodation is expected to continue.
