Nelson Mayor Rachel Reese was given a tour after officially unveiling Nelson's newest accommodation, the Quest apartments on Collingwood St, this month.
Reece welcomed the development and said that having a company invest $5 million in the region was a sign of a bright future for the city. The Mayor referred to the apartments as one of the most significant additions to Nelson's accommodation sector in the past 25-30 years.
The new Nelson apartments have been receiving bookings since June and the additional visitors staying in the five-storey serviced-apartment accommodation in the central city area was benefitting local businesses, Reece said.
Quest New Zealand chief executive Stephen Mansfield said the Nelson location had taken five years to come to fruition, and 10 different sites in the region had been considered. "All of our existing client base were asking when we would be opening in Nelson," said Mansfield.
The Quest franchise has more than 150 locations across Australasia. Four new Quest apartment complexes were opened in New Zealand regions this year. "We are proud to have a Nelson location, it is very representative of what our group is about," Mansfield said.
Nelson Tasman Tourism chief executive Lynda Keene said she thought a great benefit of the new accommodation was its position in the inner-city. "It's allowing people to stay right in the heart of the culinary and retail sector," she said.
