For many years, artists of every kind have been gravitating to the sunny, open-minded region of Nelson. Art trails allow visitors to see potters, painters, sculptors, weavers and ceramicists at work. The Saturday market in Montgomery Square is another way to experience the creativity of Nelson's community. Here you find real people, hard cash and products made and produced by the people who are selling them. Prowl the lanes between the hundreds of stalls for Nelson's best; crafts, pottery, unique gifts, designer wear, woodwork, organic veges, breads, fruit, cheeses, gourmet foods and treasures ... treat yourself at the food stalls! Trafalgar Street Market DaySaturday 4th February 2012Venue: Trafalgar Street, Nelson - 9am to 3pm Trafalgar Street Market Day - it’s a huge day of shopping bargains, entertainment and fun for the whole family. Head to Nelson City for the biggest day on the street. The Trafalgar Street Market Day, between Bridge and Hardy Streets, 9am until 3pm on Saturday 4th February. There are stalls with everything from clothes and food to arts and craft and more! Be entertained with roving musicians, street performances, face painting and balloons. There will also be local Nelson Kapa Haka group “Te Manauraraiti” – a whanau performance group specialising in Maori performing arts. Waitangi weekend! – We got it happening! Nelson Escapes will be at Market Day and will be offering a great prize draw of a trip for two to the Abel Tasman National Park - your choice of sea kayaking or boat cruise/day walk. The Saturday Market’s still on and there’s also the Buskers Festival at the top of Trafalgar Street. The Trafalgar Street Market Day is a Uniquely Nelson promotion. Festival of OpportunitiesSaturday 18th to Sunday 19th February - 10am to 6pmVenue: Founders Heritage Page An internationally renowned wellness and lifestyle weekend, the festival is all about creating Opportunities to experience the best in alternative health, wellbeing & spirituality for your body and your life. Featuring a full program of over 60 free workshops and lectures, from International and National quality presenters; there’s a chance to expand your knowledge, listen to lectures, participate in workshops, have full or mini sessions of body work and healing, talk to health professionals about their products and services, buy products or just to network and HAVE FUN! The festival will also feature a Clothes ShwOPP, where you can go shopping by swapping, exchanging unwanted clothes for tickets to buy new to you items. This year the festival aims to extend its new look by adding more outside stalls and growing the kids zone, circus skills area and hosting some great music from NZ and international musicians. Relay for Life 2012March 3rd and 4thVenue: Saxton Field Sports Complex It involves teams of 10-15 walkers or runners and one member of the team must be on the track during the entire overnight event. While the event is on, teams create a positive community atmosphere by camping out, enjoying entertainment, entertaining others, meeting new people, sharing their stories. At 10pm a Candle Light Ceremony of Hope and Remembrance is held to honour survivors and carergivers, and to remember those we have lost to cancer. Funds are used to: Expand and continue our local cancer support services. Provide support to local branches of Child Cancer, Can Teen and the Nelson Region Hospice. Provide Health promotion activities for the Nelson and Tasman communities.

The Weet-Bix Kids TRYathlon is a kiwi institution and this year it is celebrating its 20th anniversary! Be part of this year’s series by entering one of our 12 events, held all over New Zealand. Entry is open to anyone aged between 7 and 15, no matter what your level of fitness, and you can either sign up as an individual or form a team with your mates. Nelson Nines Rugby League TournamentSaturday 10th March - 10am to 5pmVenue: Trafalgar Park, Nelson Come along to the inaugural Nelson Nines. Watch the action as teams take to the field to win the Nelson Nines shield. 2010 marked the start of a new era for Rugby League in the Tasman region and March 10th 2012 will mark the start of the inaugural "Nelson Nines" rugby league tournament. This event is set to become a truly anticipated sporting event on the Australasian sporting calendar showcasing the fast version of the great game of rugby league and also the beautiful city of sunny Nelson. Rugby League nines is a fast paced hard running game with skill and of course big hits!

Every year thousands of locals and visitors come together for a summer evening filled with fine food, refreshments, live entertainment and more. This event is free to allow all our community to come together and enjoy each others company in a relaxed environment. MarchFest 2012Saturday 24th March - 12pm to 9pmVenue: Founders Heritage Park, 87 Atawhai Drive, Nelson Major UK fusion act Alabama 3, famous for their song "Woke Up This Morning" which plays over the opening credits of the hit US TV series The Sopranos have chosen Nelson's annual craft beer and music festival, MarchFest, for their only South Island gig, on Sat March 24th. Also on the bill is UK punk poet John Cooper Clarke, who rose to fame during the 1970s when he gigged with The Sex Pistols, Joy Division and other punk icons. The fifth Marchfest craft beer and music festival also rising Kiwi stars, The Drab Doo Riffs, the Auckland 5-piece fronted by ex-SuperGroover Karl Steven, music critic/DJ Grant Smithies, The Immigrants and The Ukes of Hazard. Meanwhile on the beer and cider front, 13 of the region's craft brewers and cider makers will be making brand new brews for the event. MarchFest will be continuing its reputation as a family-friendly, sustainable festival with a full programme of kids activities like last year and more sustainable festival facilities such as beer tokens, solar-powered token kiosks, wind power and audience-driven pedal-power. The names and profiles of the tutors who will be teaching are already posted on the website www.patchesoftasman.co.nz For those who have already registered the Class Registration Book is due out in September with details of the many and varied workshops that these tutors are offering. All classes, the Merchants Mall and exhibitions, (including the Hoffman Challenge) will be held at Nelson College for Girls.
