Great Bike Rides:
City to Annesbrook (Old Railway Route)
Another great facility, this ride follows the Railway Reserve from Victory Square to Beatson Road. You will cross the Annesbrook overbridge and be rewarded with the Annesbrook Youth Park to play on.
Grade: Moderate
Distance/Time: 4kms, (20-30 minutes) each way
Conditions: On-road and off-road cycleways, sealed and unsealed. The railway reserve is a gentle uphill climb.
Start location: St Vincent Street/Totara Street.
Maitai River Ride
This ride takes you along the riverside and into the start of the leafy Maitai Valley, a nice short ride with the option to connect to some off-road rides. There are some lovely picnic spots by the river, or bring your togs for a swim in the warmer months.
Grade: Easy - suitable for families.
Distance/Time: 3.7kms, (15 to 20 minutes) each way.
Conditions: Off and on-road cycleways, smooth surfaces, mostly flat.
Start location: Millers Acre Centre, corner Trafalgar and Halifax Streets.
Maitai Valley Ride
A good ride to begin with for Mountain biking, this track follows the Maitai River and connects with other rides in the area.
Grade: Easy
Distance/Time: 4kms one way, (20 minutes)
Conditions: Gravel path alongside the river, some steps and corners to negotiate as well as gates to cross. Mostly flat with a few short uphill and downhill sections.
Start location: From the city head up the Maitai Valley Road approximately 5 kilometre. Your bike ride starts at the Pipeline Bridge on the right just past the Maitai Campground. There is a small car parking area and interpretive panel.
Monaco Loop
This is an easy, quiet coastal ride where you could enjoy a family picnic along the waters edge or check out the Honest Lawyer Pub for a snack. Enjoy the coastal views.
Grade: Easy.
Distance/Time: 5kms, (25 minutes) return
Conditions: Off road cycleway, some on-road, mostly flat
Start location: Humpback Bridge car park by Nelson Airport. Get there from Bolt Road, turning into Trent Drive towards the airport, a gravelled car park is on the left by the bridge.
Old Codgers Track (Lower Part of Dun Mountain Railway)
Grade: A good off-road ride starting with an uphill gravel road section and then a delightful single track downhill to the Brook. Easy to moderate.
Distance/Time: 4km, (25 minutes) for the loop.
Conditions: 4WD gravel road up, and single track with few corners on way down - watch for uphill track users.
Start location: From the city, head up Brook Street for approximately 2km, after crossing the 2nd bridge, turn left into Tantragee Road where there is a gravel car park and interpretive panel.
Old Railway Route (Stoke)
This ride takes advantage of the cycleways that are part of the Railway Reserve and of those alongside Whakatu Drive. There are plenty of seats and ideal spots for picnics.
Grade: Easy.
Distance/Time: 13kms (45-60 minutes) loop.
Conditions: Off-road cycleways on Railway Reserve and Whakatu Drive
Start location: Annesbrook Youth Park - you can park at Quarantine Road cul-de-sac.
Tantragee Saddle
Grade: Easy to Moderate - climbs 200m
Distance/Time: 6-7km (30 minutes)
Conditions: Uphill climb on gravel road and then down gravel road and smaller track.
Start location: From the city, ride up Brook Street for approximately 2km, turn left after the second bridge turn left into Tantragee Road where there is a gravel car park and information panel.
Trafalgar Cycleway
This ride uses the Trafalgar Cycleway and takes you past Founders Heritage Park and the Miyazu Japanese Gardens. Carry on to the Wakapuaka Cemetery to enjoy the views and make use of the playground at Neale Park on the return journey.
Grade: Easy
Distance/Time: 4.8kms (30 minutes) loop
Conditions: Flat, on-road and off-road cycleways
Start location: By the river at Millers Acre Centre, corner Trafalgar and Halifax Streets.
Waterfront Ride
This ride follows Rocks Road along the waterfront for stunning views and returns via the Nelson Marina. A great ride to stop for a picnic, swim at the beach or make use of the recreational activities at Tahunanui Reserve.
Grade: Easy
Distance/Time: Total 11km. 5 km (25 minutes) to beach; 6km (35 minutes) return via Nelson Marina.
Conditions: Flat, on-road and off-road cycleways, mostly sealed.
Start location: Millers Acre Centre, corner Trafalgar and Halifax Streets.
