Buller/Murchison Area

Fishing - Owen River

173 Owen Valley East Road, Murchison. (03) 523 9075. With over a dozen rivers and streams, the town is a fisherman's paradise. Brown trout averaging 1.6kg. Guided fly fishing is available. Owen River Lodge is located near Murchison, in the Nelson Lakes area of the South Island (the top of the South Island). The lodge is centrally located, with easy access to the Nelson and West Coast Fisheries. Thus you can enjoy fly fishing on numerous blue-ribbon streams and rivers, with over 30 waters accessible by road (most within 1 hours drive) and countless others by helicopter. The secret to maximising your fishing experience is to use an experienced fishing guide. This company is very fortunate to work with some of New Zealand’s most experienced fly fishing guides.



There is no excuse for boredom when you visit Murchison, a 1 ½ hour drive south of Nelson. Murchison is the heart of the ‘great outdoors’ with adventure and excitement at every turn. As the self-proclaimed ’white-water capital of New Zealand’ Murchison is a thrill-seeker’s dream. The Buller river offers some of the best white-water kayaking and rafting in the country and the Buller Gorge has its fair share of adventure activities.
